Thin air distance math

How much farther does the ball really fly at 6,500 feet?

· Wes Hartigan

Air at 6,500 feet is about twenty percent thinner than at sea level. That gives the ball less to push against, which means more carry.

In our measurements, most players see an increase of eight to ten percent. A driver that carries 230 at sea level carries around 250 in Durango.

How to adjust

Do not assume your sea-level yardages. Take the monitor numbers and build a card. Many players find they need a club less than they think.

The effect is smaller on shorter clubs. A wedge gains a few yards. A long iron gains more.
